The Legend of the Bluebonnet

DePaola, T. (1983).  The legend of the bluebonnet. NY: Putnam.

Many years ago, when drought and great suffering threatened a Native American tribe in Texas, She-Who-Is-Alone made the biggest sacrifice anyone could make.  This Comanche girl gave up the only thing she had left from her family.  She sacrificed her warrior doll so the spirits would forgive their selfishness and in return, the Great Spirits brought rain back as well as a beautiful gift, the bluebonnets that we see every spring in Texas.

Evaluation Criteria: Setting
The Legend of the Bluebonnet uses setting as a framework for the story. Set in a Comanche village during a time of drought, the setting both transports the reader to a different time and place and connects to modern times. The idea of sacrificing a prized possession for something more transcends the setting. However, without the setting The Legend of the Bluebonnet would lose its beauty and nostalgia.
