Martina the Beautiful Cockroach

Deedy, C. (2007).  Martina the beautiful cockroach. Atlanta: Peachtree Publishers.

Martina is a beautiful cockroach ready for marriage. With so many suitors, her Cuban Abuela advised her to spill coffee in their shoes, and it worked. "The Coffee Test" got the suitors so angry that it not only made them lose their temper, but they revealed their true intentions. Ready to give up, Abuela introduces her to a shy mouse that has been there all along, and to her surprise he has a Cuban grandmother, too!

Evaluation Criteria:  Cultural Markers
Martina the Beautiful Cockroach is an excellent example of cultural markers in a children’s picture book. The vibrant colors, lush scenery and touch of Spanish all lend authenticity to this retelling of a Cuban folktale. The illustrations suggest the culture of the character and setting with warm, vibrant shades. The variety of characters, from the pompous rooster to the kind Perez show that the story doesn’t paint any group in a stereotypical way, instead showing the varied personalities present both in the story and in life.
