Satrapi,
M. (2003). Persepolis. N, NY: Pantheon Books.
Summary: Persepolis is an
exquisite story told through the lens of Marjane Satrapi the author of her own
story. Ms. Satrapi tells her story of
growing up in Iran as the country encountered suppressive regimes, terrifying
killings, and prejudiced laws. In light of all the harmful events she reveals
to the reader a story of a rich culture full of life and love. She felt it
important not to forget those that were forced to leave their families and
homeland, those that lost their lives in prisons defending freedom, and those
who died in the war against Iraq. The book
is presented in a graphic novel format which is unique for this type of story. The
coming of age theme is apparent in this novel as Marjane develops into an
independent woman who then questions her national identity.
