Woodson, J. (2014). Brown girl dreaming. New York, NY:
Penguin Group.
Summary: Brown girl dreaming is a beautifully written
story in the format of free verse poetry.
This books explores the author’s life as she was growing up in the 1960s
and 1970s in both the North and the South.
She explores what life was like growing up in the South in her early
childhood as her awareness of the civil rights movement grew and its impact on her
and her family. She also describes life in Brooklyn, New York in her later
adolescence and how being a Jehovah Witness meant following rules not everyone
understood. The greatest moment was when she found her voice through her
writing despite her struggles with reading. Included in the book are a family
tree and actually photos of family members.
Family is a major theme in this story.
In Brown Girl Dreaming, family
involves mutual love, compassion, loyalty towards, and emotional, spiritual,
and physical support of individuals who may or may not be blood-related, but
who still behave in the fashion of the traditional family unit.
